Following the success of the complete canon, both on BBC Radio 4 and commercially on tapes and CDs, the BBC commissioned Bert Coules to write a new series of original stories. It was decided to base the episodes on five of Doyle's tantalising throwaway references to other cases, which he scattered throughout the fifty-six short stories and four novels.
