Southfork was formed in late 1997 during jam sessions between friends Gunnar Lööf and Sebastian Sippola. At the time they were sharing the same rehearsal studio, but played in different bands. The project was initially called Bulldozer and the first songs that came out of this collaboration were Man Made of Stone and Space Revolution. Soon bass player Anders Fästader joined the line-up and the group took its present name. Shortly thereafter, Henrik Bergqvist was brought in on lead guitar and the line-up was complete.
